Smart integration of V2G (Vehicle-to-grid) into local renewable systems based – smart grid: Advanced Power converters and predictive control systems
Project description
Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) and energy storage are promising technologies to enhance the grid integration of local renewable energy systems. Due to the large increase in the number of PV installations and the local demand (electric vehicles, heat pumps, etc.) on the distribution grid, grid operators are facing integration challenges regarding the Power Quality (PQ), with high power flows, frequency/voltage deviations and harmonic disturbances. This research will focus on the design optimization of advanced high-efficiency Power Electronics (PE) converters (DC/DC converters, V2G converters, chargers, inverters) for a smart integration and interfacing of storage technologies with the local energy systems. In particular, the PE converters will be designed to balance the PV generation and load demand while supporting the grid, enabling V2G and grid-support functionalities. Together with these advanced PE converters, this research will develop a predictive control system for mitigating PQ issues and enhancing the smart grid integration of the energy storage and generation units. A grid emulator will be used to reproduce the disturbances and perform real-time simulation of the control system.
