Discourse markers belong to a category of linguistic devices which seem to play an important role in expressing and interpreting discourse in an adequate way. Despite their key-role in discourse, they are not easy to define.

While the information crisis is widely acknowledged, academic knowledge on the depth, extent and detailed manifestation of this crisis is lacking due to an evidence and research deficit.

The 21st century is sometimes termed the Century of the Photon. The general trend in optics and photonics is about better performances, compactness and multifunctionality in the same volume.

DNA is not only one of the most important biopolymers, but also an extremely interesting functional polymer for molecular self-assembly. In catalysis, it can be used to assemble so-called “hybrid catalysts”, which are formed from a piece of DNA and a low molecular weight metal complex.

In string theory one assumes that elementary particles are not point like but rather little strings (higher dimensional objects, called branes, appear as well). A string like object perceives geometry (e.g. the ambient spacetime) in a very different way than what a point particle does.

With the growing amount to data produced by humans as well as embedded sensors, there is a need for tools to analyse the resulting large datasets. Nowadays the exploration and analysis of large datasets is mainly supported by advanced visualisation techniques.

Research towards efficient algorithms for combinatorial search, in domains such as answer set programming, Boolean satisfiability, Quantified Boolean Formulas, Constraint Programming, Pseudo-Boolean solving and Mixed Integer Programming is greatly valued in my lab.
